Achieving Women – Staff Nonexempt
The winner of the 2012 Achieving Women award in the staff nonexempt category is Barbara Ann Kaunas, administrative support assistant in Academic Affairs at Penn State Schuylkill.

Barbara is described as contributing to human causes and public service activities in a big way. Barbara coordinates the donation of teddy bears to the children at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center on behalf of the Penn State Schuylkill Commission for Women and THON. The bears are given to children who enter the emergency room, pediatric unit, and the hospital's hematology and oncology units. Barbara is very passionate about this project. In its first year this project saw fifty bears sponsored by the students, faculty, staff, and community members. This project was so successful that Barbara increased the number of bears for this year to seventy five and is already planning for the grand opening of the Hershey Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital in October of this year.

Barbara has been a member of the Commission for Women since she began her employment at Penn State in 2007 serving as secretary of the Penn State Schuylkill Commission for Women for two years. In addition, Barbara has participated in the Campus Liaison Committee at University Park. Barbara goes above and beyond her call of duty in assisting the faculty with projects, involving herself with the students, making herself available to help others in need, and volunteering her time with a multitude of campus events.

Barbara was recognized at Schuylkill campus as a recipient of the Linda Fehr Memorial Award, which recognizes a person who has demonstrated their commitment to support the interests and issues of women at Schuylkill campus. One nominator described Barbara as making an enormous impact on the Schuylkill campus community as she gives unselfishly to support the interests and concerns of women of all ages.
