Student Leadership Award

Samantha Fortier  B.S., Biobehavioral Health

As a Jewish Latina from California, Samantha Fortier’s move to State College required some cultural adjustment, but her personality and drive have helped her become one of the most dynamic, determined, and recognized leaders on campus. Samantha has led Latina/o students in organizations such as Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority and Latino Caucus, but has also participated in campus-wide initiatives such as the MLK, Jr. Day of Service Committee and the Ritner Hall Experience. While balancing leadership commitments, Samantha has maintained an excellent GPA in Biobehavioral Health, while completing several internships, such as the Healthy Bodies Project. She recently presented her research, based on her field work in Tanzania, at the Society for Applied Anthropology Conference, and has been accepted to two graduate programs in public health. She aims to continue her health-oriented, social justice work and her efforts to empower Latino communities throughout graduate school and beyond.
