Interpreting and/or Captioning Requests for Penn State University non-academic events and/or courses

The Pennsylvania State University is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to programs, facilities, admission, and employment without regard to personal characteristics not related to ability, performance, or qualifications as determined by University policy or by state or federal authorities. The Pennsylvania State University does not discriminate against any person because of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status.

The Office for Disability Services (ODS) at Penn State University provides interpreting and/or captioning services for students who are enrolled in credit bearing courses at Penn State and who have met all of the policies and procedures set by the Office for Disability Services for receiving such services as outlined in Students with Hearing Impairments.

The Office for Disability Services does not provide interpreting and/or captioning services for any University function other than for credit bearing courses.

It is the responsibility of the sponsoring organization of any event, program, or activity (other than credit bearing courses) to arrange and pay for requested interpreting and/or captioning services for an individual with a disability who requests this service in a timely manner and follows the University procedures for requesting such services.

These events may include but are not limited to:

  • Conferences/workshops
  • Guest lecturers
  • Special performances
  • Recognition ceremonies
  • Staff meetings
  • Professional development
  • Sports events
  • Club events
  • Entertainment venues

Guidelines for Interpreting/Captioning Requests for Non-Credit Bearing Courses:

Interpreter/Transliterator:

  1. Penn State adheres to the Pennsylvania Sign Language Interpreter and Transliterator State Registration Act of 2004, which outlines requirements for the use of sign language interpreting and transliterating services.
  2. The sponsoring organization may contact ODS at 814-863-1807 for a listing of local certified, state-registered interpreters. The sponsoring organization may also go to the Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing interpreter and search their website.
  3. The person(s) requesting interpreting or transliterating services has the option to request the services of a non-certified interpreter. If a non-certified interpreter is used, both the interpreter and the client must complete a waiver form.
  4. All costs associated with hiring interpreters for non-academic events or courses are the responsibility of the sponsoring organization.

Captioning Services:

  1. The sponsoring organization may contact ODS (814-863-1807) for contact information for area captionists.
  2. All costs associated with hiring captionists for non-academic events or courses are the responsibility of the sponsoring organization.
