Using the Universal Library in Kurzweil

Beginning Spring Semester 2013, all students who use Kurzweil 3000 and receive their electronic books through SDR will receive their books through the Web Universal Library (unless they specifically indicate that they do not want to receive their books in this manner). The Universal Library is a web based file storage that you may access directly from Kurzweil 3000 Web License or firefly.

The following are the steps for students to receive their books in electronic format through the Universal Library:

  • Starting in the Spring 2013 Semester, disability services will begin uploading student's books who utilize Kurzweil 3000 to the Universal Library on instead of the University's storage space, PASS.
  • Students will be able to access these books from any location using a web browser at
  • Students also have the ability to upload any of their own personal files. This can be done by clicking on the "Upload a File" link on the Universal Library page within Firefly. We suggest that students only utilize the personal file folder labeled Private folder to keep their information confidential. Otherwise, the Public folders allow access from anyone who has a Kurzweil 3000 log in account for Penn State.
  • Only students using a PC can upload a collection of files (such as various chapters of a book).  In order to upload a collection of files, the student will need to download the FireFly Uploader program to their PC. Unfortunately, this feature is not currently available for the Mac or iPad versions.
