Priority Registration / Honor Cord
Instructions for Priority Registration and Honor Cord Application
Penn State recognizes those who have honorably served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces by awarding priority registration and a red, white, and blue honor cord at graduation in recognition of their duty and sacrifice. Priority registration allows veterans, active duty service members and reservists to schedule classes ahead of the general student population. Priority registration dates differ by campus location; to check with your campus registrar and determine which date is applicable to you, visit the registrar website: http://www.registrar.psu.edu/contact/campus_registrar_contacts.cfm
The term “veteran” refers to an individual who:
- Has served in the United States Armed Forces, including a reserve or guard component, and
- Was discharged or released from such service with a condition other than dishonorable.
The term “actively serving” refers to an individual who:
- Is currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, including a reserve or guard component.
To receive priority registration and/or honor cord recognition, students who are using a military educational benefit (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 1606, 1607) need only submit an email request to: email@example.com. Our office will verify your benefit eligibility/use and will make the appropriate changes in LionPath. If there is a problem or concern, we will notify you.
For those veteran, active duty or reservist students who are not using a military benefit, but wish to receive priority registration and/or the Military Honor Cord, please send a copy of the Member 2 or Member 4 section of your DD 214 (indicating character of discharge.) Please annotate your Penn State ID number and Penn State email on your DD 214.
For those actively serving military members, students should send a letter from their command stating their dates and characterization of service. This letter must be signed by the students’ commander and no electronic signatures will be accepted. Statement of Service Template
