Mentoring Foundations Workshop (Virtual)

  • September 30, 2026
  • 9:00 a.m.
  • Zoom (Link to made available closer to event.)

Overview

This foundational workshop introduces mentoring as accompaniment through transition: walking alongside a student as they navigate change. Grounded in Penn State's six core mentoring competencies (adapted from CIMER's Entering Mentoring curriculum), participants will explore core principles including trust, agency, and aligned expectations, practice compassionate communication, and examine how to build inclusive mentoring relationships across diverse experiences.

Open to all Penn State faculty and staff. This session also counts as Milestone 1 for anyone pursuing a Building Inclusive Campus Environments Provost Endorsement in mentoring.

This event is for both mentoring student veterans and mentoring students with disabilities.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common barriers students face
  • Practice effective communication strategies
  • Apply accessible and inclusive approaches to mentorships
  • Analyze real-world scenarios
  • Develop actionable next steps
