Who can be a member of the Commission?
The commission is comprised of up to fifty full-time University faculty, staff, students, and administrators. The commission values the breadth of background and experience that can be found among the members of the University community and are actively seeking a broad base of applicants. Students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, and administrators from all Penn State campuses are eligible to serve. Individuals interested in working to enhance diversity and support the mission of CLGBTQE are encouraged to apply.
Each February, the commission invites individuals to apply for membership for the upcoming year. A Nominating/Membership Committee reviews eligible applications and forwards a list of nominees to the President of Penn State for appointment.
Employees must be in good standing to be considered for commission membership. For University activities such as commissions and award programs, faculty or staff are considered to be in good standing if they are meeting the expectations of their positions and have not been the recipient of recent discipline. Individuals should also exhibit qualities such as civility, collegiality, and a commitment to the overall success of their departments. Staff members may wish to speak with their supervisors about this University service opportunity prior to submitting an application.
Undergraduate students must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in order to serve on CLGBTQE. Graduate students must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to serve on CLGBTQE. Student applicants’ academic records and conduct histories will be checked to determine eligibility for commission membership.
What does Commission membership involve?
Commission members serve three-year terms, attend meetings, serve on or chair committees, and have voting privileges. Membership generally requires several hours of service per month, including meeting attendance and committee work. Leadership positions require a higher level of participation. Staff members are encouraged to discuss their level of participation with their supervisors.
