Deborah Acevedo-Abreu
- Counselor, Serving Hazleton Area High School
In 2013, Ms. Deborah Acevedo started her career in an Internship with the Migrant Education Program in Hazleton, where she began working as a summer Instructor and an after-school ESL Instructor. Upon graduation, Deborah was offered a job as a School Success Coordinator with Penn State’s Upward Bound Migrant Program and has worked for UBM ever since. With a deep desire to do more and help the community in 2015, she began working for The CareerLink and the ALTA Program as a Case Manager, Transition Support Specialist, and Tutor coordinator. Two years later, with the UBM Program, she was promoted as a full-time counselor at Penn State University.
The difficulties she faced as a High School student, after moving from Puerto Rico, serves as an inspiration for Deborah’s work. Daily work is a gratifying experience for her because she assists others in transitioning and adjusting to the education system in the Hazleton Area. Deborah highly believes that language barriers do not define an individual's actual knowledge or potential.
