Bunton-Waller Fellows and Merits Program
About
The Bunton-Waller scholars program provides two scholarship program opportunities. Each program has unique eligibility and programming requirements.
All Bunton-Waller award recipients are selected by the individual colleges and academic units.
Bunton-Waller Merit Award: Bunton-Waller Merits receive academic coaching from the Office of Scholars Programs and have a mentor in their respective college. The Bunton-Waller Merit Program provides financial support for students beginning in their first year for a maximum of eight semesters. Recipients of the Bunton-Waller Merit award are enrolled at University Park.
Bunton-Waller Fellows Award: Bunton-Waller Fellows are part of the Penn State Educational Equity Scholars community Bunton-Waller Fellows join a cohort of their classmates in a living-learning program in their first year, receive academic coaching from the Office of Scholars Programs, and have a mentor in their respective college. Bunton-Waller Fellows receives financial support beginning in their first year for a maximum of eight semesters. Bunton-Waller Fellows are enrolled in every academic college and the Division of Undergraduate Studies at University Park, Harrisburg, and Erie.
History
Named in honor of Mildred Settle Bunton ‘32 and Calvin Hoffman Waller ‘04, recognized as Penn State’s first African American alumna and alumnus, Bunton-Waller awards are given to students who contribute to the diversity and inclusion initiatives at Penn State. Established in 1994, the Bunton-Waller program enhances Penn State’s educational mission by bringing a community of curious, talented, and diverse students to Penn State.
Since its founding, Penn State has graduated over 1,000 Bunton-Waller Fellows who have continued to distinguished careers in medicine, communications, engineering, the performing arts, and finance, to name a few. Demonstrating Penn State’s values of community, respect, responsibility, integrity, excellence, and discovery, Bunton-Waller students embody what it means to be Penn State.
