Read & Write
Read & Write brings together text-to-speech within documents and on the web, study tools, OCR, and many more accessibility tools within one program. Students who are approved to receive Digital Course Materials can use Read & Write to access their requested materials and have them read aloud.
Who can use Read & Write?
All Penn State community members who have an active psu.edu email address can access Read & Write. No additional sign up required.
Download App
Download the app using the appropriate link below and install the app following the on-screen instructions.
Signing into Read & Write
- Open the installed application
- When the app asks for authentication: Select the option for Microsoft Office 365.
- On the next screen, enter your Penn State email address (e.g. abc123@psu.edu)
- You will be authenticated through Penn State Web Access.
Toolbar
The toolbar below provides the following options:
- Text-to-speech (play, pause, stop, forward, and back)
- Highlighting tools
- Screenshot Reader (OCR selected content)
- Scan (OCR entire documents)
- Speech-to text
- Screen Masking
- Spell Check
- Word and Picture Dictionary
- Translator
Note: Although the Read & Write toolbars on Windows, Mac, and Chrome look slightly different, all features are available on all platforms.

Contact Penn State Support
