Work-Study Positions

VA education benefit that pays Work-Study students minimum wage, non-taxed, for up to 25 hours of VA-related activities

Eligibility

All positions require that students be...

  • Military-affiliated
  • Attending at least ¾ time
  • Actively using GI Bill® benefits through Title 38 or Title 10 under
    • Ch30: Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB)
    • Ch31: Veteran Readiness & Employment (formally 'Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment')
    • Ch35: Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA)
    • Ch1606: MGIB – Selected Reserve (SR)
    • Ch33: Post-9/11 GI Bill®, including Transfer of Entitlement (TOE) and Fry Scholarship recipients

Front Desk/Office Assistant

(This position has been filled)

As a team member, you will be responsible for:

  • Greeting visitors
  • Answering/transferring phone calls
  • Providing guidance on VA benefits
  • Maintaining certification files, data entry, filing, and office maintenance

Position Requirements

  • Military-affiliated students
  • Attending at least ¾ time
  • Actively using a GI Bill® benefit

Peer Counselor and Outreach Program

Outreach Counselors will be responsible for:

  • Providing information on educational opportunities
  • Financial aid
  • VA benefits supporting prospective and current students
  • Students will establish and maintain connections around Penn State and the greater community
  • Should be able to work independently or as a team towards common goals.

Position Requirements

  • Military-affiliated students
  • Attending at least ¾ time
  • Actively using a GI Bill® benefit

Student Sponsor

Student Sponsors are responsible for:

  • Helping incoming student veterans acclimate to student life
  • Connect with Penn State and community resources
  • Provide opportunities for socialization and refer to services when necessary
  • Provide this assistance to a caseload of approximately fifteen to twenty-five incoming student veterans

Position Requirements

  • Military veterans
  • Attending at least ¾ time
  • Actively using a GI Bill® benefit
  • Have been a Penn State University Park student for at least one full academic year
  • Students pursuing degrees in the following are strongly encouraged to apply
    • Biobehavioral Health
    • Human Development and Family Studies
    • Psychology
    • Rehabilitation and Human Services
    • Sociology

Content Creator and Graphic Designer, Veterans Affairs and Services (Fulfills IST internship requirement):

Objectives:

  • Work on a wide range of projects and media, although currently it is the Student Veteran Career Passport, using various software programs to visualize and develop innovative graphic designs that meet business goals
  • Obtain input from managers to ensure that designs meet organizational standards and brand expectations, express ideas accurately, and represent the company or client appropriately
  • Work independently as well as cooperatively with marketing team to meet deadlines, stay within budget, and schedule project implementation based on workload, which may include five or more simultaneous projects
  • Examine existing processes, identify flaws, and create solutions that improve design capabilities
  • Update and maintain internal databases for designs, photography, and video

 

Responsibilities:

  • Create visual concepts, develop layouts and design for a Student Veteran Career Passport
  • Conceptualize designs, collaborate with the SVCC, using design software to produce final graphics
  • Brainstorming and developing design concepts based on SVCC briefs and project objectives
  • Creating layouts, graphics, and visual assets for print publications, websites, social media, and presentations
  • Utilizing design software like Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator to produce and refine designs
  • Working with SVCC & PSU Branding to ensure designs align with brand guidelines and effectively communicate the intended message
  • Collaborate, brainstorm, and strategize with multiple teams or clients on a wide range of materials that may include web pages, presentations, programming collateral, signage, internal communications, newsletters, and marketing materials
  • Translate strategic direction into high-quality design within an established brand identity
  • Develop concepts by hand or with software, and execute original content by determining the ideal usage of color, text, font style, imagery, and layout
  • Manage the design and uploading process for all project materials, based on best practices for using a content management system
  • Use trend intelligence and knowledge of historical and current markets when designing and executing specific classifications

 

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in design software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, or others)
  • Strong understanding of design principles, typography, and color theory
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with others
  • Creativity, innovative design skills, and a keen eye for detail
  • Organizational and time-management skills for meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Currently enrolled at Penn State
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
